People stay healthy when they eat only the amount of food they need and when they exercise. However, many Americans eat too much, and they seldom exercise. In fact, a surprising 45 percent of American adults are overweight.
The problem is the United States may be found in the environment. To begin with, Americans have too much food available. For example, many restaurants are open from early in the morning to late at night. Second, many Americans eat foods that are too high in fat and too low in fiber, and some even snack all day long. In the United States in the 1850’s, men’s roles were very different from women’s. Most men had to go to work to bring home money. They had to be strong and support their families. Men were not supposed to show their emotions.
However, women also had their own role. Most women had to stay at home and take care of children. They had to cook and clean. Most women did not work outside of the home. They were mostly wives and mothers.
Now, more women are becoming professionals. Some men are staying home and taking care of their children. Young boy has „close call”
Jesse Manning had a close call last week – or at least that’s what his family and friends thought. This is his side of the story.
„One day last week, I was playing baseball in the yard with my friends. My friend Harry hit the ball the way to the back of the yard, and it rolled right into the old well! All of the houses in the neighbourhood have old wells in their yards, but most of them are dry. It was one of my favourite baseballs, so I decided to climb into the well to get it. As I was climbing down, I suddenly fell. I became really frightened, but when I realized I wasn’t hurt, I began looking around. My friends said they called my name, but I didn’t hear them.
It was around dinnertime, and my mom was cooking in the kitchen. All of a sudden she noticed how quiet it had become. She became suspicious. When she looked out in the yard, she saw all my friends standing around the well. She ran to the well and yelled my name. Bu I couldn’t hear her. She ran back to the house, called the emergency number, and then called my father at work.
The firemen arrived and climbed to get me. They found me sitting and looking into a metal box full of incredible things. I had a few minor scratches, but nothing serious.
Here’s the best part of the story – that evening I was on the news showing the world my amazing discovery.”
- What do you think the other children did when Mrs. Manning went to get help?
- What do you think Edward Manning did right after he got call at work?
- What do you think the Manning family did about the old well after Jesse’s accident?
- What do you think Jessie found in the metal box?
